A simple principle: generating electricity from rotary motion

In the cogeneration unit, a special, gas-powered combustion engine drives a generator to convert mechanical energy into electricity. This is used to supply the current demand in the building to which it is connected, any excess can be fed into the supply network. The exhaust heat is recovered from the cooling water, lubricating oil, exhaust and charge air in heat exchangers, producing hot water with a flow temperature of 90 °C to 95 °C. With this optimised use of the heat, Burkhardt cogeneration units achieve efficiencies of up to 92 %.

What does heat-controlled cogeneration unit mean?

The cogeneration unit is turned on and off according to a required temperature value (e.g. hot water return temperature). The heat is all used in the heating system. The electricity generated can be used locally or fed into the supply network. Heat-controlled cogeneration units represent the majority of installed plants.

What does power-controlled cogeneration unit mean?

The cogeneration unit is turned on and off according to the electricity demand. The requirement can be:

  • load line for the electricity demand,
  • network related control,
  • virtual power station,
  • island operation,
  • ripple control receiver from the distribution network operator.

In power-controlled operation, the heat generated can be used in various ways:

  • direct use in the heating system,
  • storage in a heat buffer,
  • use in an absorption refrigeration system,
  • evacuation of the heat via emergency coolers.

  • gas control loop in accordance with DVGW (the German gas and water institute),
  • 3-way catalyser (air aspirated engine) or oxidation catalyser (supercharged engine),
  • heat extraction from exhaust, including exhaust heat exchanger,
    heat extraction from engine cooling, including plate heat exchanger, cooling water pump and safety system,
  • safety package of gas sensor and leak detection system,
  • switchgear and control,
  • remote maintenance access via Burkhardt plant portal.

Optional accessories for Burkhardt cogeneration units:

  • ventilation components for engine room ventilation and extraction,
  • two-section exhaust silencer and stainless steel chimney,
  • various system for lubricating oil supply,
  • heating installation with return temperature boost,
