At the foot of Mount Fuji and about 100 km from Tokyo is the 65% wooded city of Oyama (Shizuoka prefecture) with around 20,000 inhabitants. This city has set itself the goal of promoting nature conservation and strengthening the regional economy, in particular forestry. With this in mind, in September 2018, the power plant “Mori no Kintaro” (freely translated as “Forest power plant of Kintaro”) was opened.
The building, which was specifically designed by an architect, was built using local cedar wood and equipped with various renewable energy sources. The roof of the building, for example, consists exclusively of solar panels, which provide a total output of approx. 50 kW. A plateau on one part of the building can be used by visitors to relax and enjoy the great view. The heart of this unique power plant is the wood gasifier V3.90 and the combined heat and power plant ECO 165 HG from Burkhardt, both of which were successfully commissioned in early September 2018. This highly efficient cogeneration technology converts locally produced pellets from the neighbouring pellet plant into electricity and heat. The 260 kW heat produced will soon be delivered to the nearby greenhouses still under construction. The green electricity produced of a total of 165 kW is fed into the public grid and compensated with the highest payment class. One of the deciding factors here is the (Japanese) origin of the wood the pellets are produced from.
The site where the wood gasifier and CHP are located will be developed on a larger scale in the future. For example, there will soon be a motorway exit near the Burkhardt facility from the new motorway between Tokyo and Nagoya, which promises to revitalise the region and will attract additional visitors to the facility. Furthermore, the mayor of the city stressed at the inauguration ceremony that he wanted to increase the number of wood gasifiers in the future. Sanyo Trading, Burkhardt’s partner in Japan, is already working on another project in Oyama.
