Austria's largest wood gasification plant
It was a special topping-out ceremony at a special address and for a special occasion. Together with the municipality, Stadtwerke Fürstenfeld invited guests to the recently completed operations hall of the new wood gasifier plant at Energieweg 7 shortly before Christmas 2023. Austria's largest wood gasifier plant was built here in record-breaking construction time. It is Fürstenfeld's next huge step towards energy independence from fossil fuels. The energy revolution has been heralded.
Heated with pellets, the plant uses wood gas to power twelve MAN engines on twelve lines. In the two-stage process, heat is generated and electricity is produced by the wood gas-powered engines. The plant is equipped with state-of-the-art filters and catalysers and is virtually emission-free.
With 2,000 kW for electricity and 3,000 kW for heat, the plant's performance spectrum is impressive. The production figures are equally impressive. Around 16,000 megawatt hours of electricity are produced per year. This corresponds to around 75 per cent (!) of Fürstenfeld's annual electricity consumption or the electricity requirements of around 5,300 households. And with 20,000 megawatts of heat, the energy requirements of the Fürstenfeld district heating network can be covered almost 100 per cent, even with further massive expansion stages. The demand for natural gas is extremely low and is therefore only needed in emergencies.
At the topping-out ceremony, Mayor Franz Jost and DDI Dr Franz Friedl, head of the municipal utility, welcomed all the employees and company representatives involved in the construction and operation of the plant - led by the plant engineers Claus Burkhardt and Alfred Sumann as well as chief planner Leo Riebenbauer.
