Open Day in Horb, Black Forest

Last Friday, 31 January, the public had the opportunity to visit the new Horb Weststadt combined heat and power unit. This installation, together with a local heating network, forms part of the neighbourhood concept of the Stadtwerke Horb municipal utility company. The combined heat and power unit and the local heating network are in turn part of the Horb 2050 Climate-Neutral Project.

At the heart of the new energy distribution station are the Burkhardt wood gasifier and the Burkhardt combined heat and power unit. Two buffer tanks with a volume of 100 m³ cushion peak loads in the heating network. Of the 2,320 metres of network planned in the neighbourhood concept, 1,850 metres are already in operation. This means that in future around 1,050 tonnes of CO2 can be saved, which would have been produced by heating the building with conventional heating systems using heating oil or natural gas.

Should other residents subsequently decide to connect to the local heating network, there is the possibility of extending the new heating station.

As part of the solar initiative of the municipal utility company, photovoltaic systems were also installed on private and public roofs to increase the proportion of renewable electricity in the neighbourhood.

Background:

In 2015, the city of Horb participate in the statewide competition “Climate-neutral municipality”. After a Europe wide tender Burkhardt was able to prove itself to the supplier in the face of a number of competitors. Two wood gasifiers and two CHPs were installed in Horb on the grounds of the former barracks.
