Sludge Drying Project Aichaberg 2, Hohenburg

Sludge drying system with biomass heating plant

Project description

Another independent sludge drier went into operation in November 2021 at the site of the existing sludge drier from 2008. The BURKHARDT DRYLINE®, with a capacity of < 50 t/day, and a biomass heating plant with a 2 MW biomass boiler for supplying heat to the belt dryer were installed at the site. The drying system is designed to operate for more than 8,000 hours per year.

The pre-drained sludge is fed just-in-time via a receiving hopper into the belt dryer. Two drive-in silos acting as intermediate buffers provide flexibility. A low-temperature belt dryer is used to dry the sludge. The exhaust air volume of about 30,000 Nm3/h is then cleaned in a chemical wash with a biostage. After drying, the biosolids are loaded onto the trucks with a mechanical loader, weighed and transported away. The sludge is intended to be used in cement plants and energy production facilities.

Key technical data

  • Total sludge recycled (25% DR): approx. 17,000 t/a
